The 9th edition of the African Peace and Security Annual Conference (APSACO) is fast approaching. On June 19–20, 2025, the Policy Center for the New South will convene this flagship conference in Rabat to foster critical reflection and informed debate on the evolving peace and security landscape in Africa.
 

WHY APSACO 2025 MATTERS

At a time of global turbulence, marked by fragmented power dynamics, intensified geopolitical competition, and the rise of hybrid threats, APSACO 2025 places the spotlight on Africa’s agency amid global uncertainties. More than a diagnosis of the continent’s challenges, this edition aims to articulate strategic pathways for resilience, governance reform, and security innovation.

 

Bringing together high-level policymakers, scholars, and practitioners, the conference will interrogate how African states and institutions are responding to overlapping crises, ranging from regional fragmentation and entrenched conflict zones to shifting global alliances and ideological battles.

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS

Rooted in rigorous analysis and forward-looking perspectives, this year’s panels and conversations include:

  • Africa’s Sub-Regional Landscape in 2024: Examining the tension between regional integration and political dislocation.
  • Conflict Trajectories in Sudan, Libya, and the Great Lakes: Assessing the evolution of complex crises and peace frameworks.
  • Strategic Narratives: Exploring Africa’s capacity to shape the geopolitics of ideas and reclaim epistemic sovereignty.
  • Defense Policies and Strategic Autonomy: Addressing the imperative for sovereign security strategies that balance ambition and realism.
  • Mobility and Security in Africa: Population Flows in Times of Uncertainty: As mobility patterns evolve under the pressures of conflict, climate, and governance failure, what security paradigms are needed to manage displacement and human movement without securitizing populations?
  • Geopolitical Realignments: Navigating global rivalries and rethinking Africa’s diplomatic positioning in a multipolar world.
  • Reforming APSA: Evaluating the future of Africa’s peace and security architecture in the face of emerging threats.
