CONTINUED ENGAGEMENT OF, AND WITH, THE ADEL COMMUNITY IN 2021!

In 2021, the Policy Center for the New South continued on its mission to contribute to intergenerational dialogue and create inclusive and intergenerational spaces in its research and activities by providing the ADEL Alumni community members with a platform. Over the course of the year, about 40 ADEL Alumni participated in webinars, conferences and podcasts, and contributed to its analytical production.

ADEL ALUMNI IN ANNUAL CONFERENCES AND WEBINARS

In 2021, ADEL alumni were invited to speak on topics aligned with their expertise in several webinars.

ADEL Alumni community members Asmae El Hajji, ADEL 2018 and Touria Benlafquih, ADEL 2017 took part in the third edition of “Parlons Développement”, a series of events and webinars organized in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank aiming to question the sustainable transformations that the COVID crisis can generate, and their impact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

Asmae and Touria addressed the role of youth as drivers of sustainable development.

Additionally, ADEL 2017 alumnus Ayman Cherkaoui spoke in a webinar on “The EU Green Deal and the Maghreb Countries” organized by the PCNS and the Instituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI) to discuss the European Green Deal and its consequences on Northern African countries.

In 2021, the Policy Center held its annual conferences online. In order to foster intergenerational dialogue, the Policy Center invited members of its ADEL alumni community to speak in the high-level panels of its flagship conference, the Atlantic Dialogues.

CONTRIBUTIONS, PUBLICATIONS, AND COLLABORATIONS

Every year, the PCNS opens its platform and invites ADEL alumni to contribute to its analytical production and opinion pieces. The goal is to create an intergenerational space and ensure the contribution of young experts from the ADEL alumni community.

 

Six opinions were written by the ADEL alumni in 2021 on topics ranging from the Decolonization of Knowledge to the Regulation of Financial Inclusion. You can find them here.

Atlantic Currents The eighth edition of the Atlantic Currents report, “The Wider Atlantic in a Challenging Recovery” offers an in-depth analysis of the struggles and challenges faced by Atlantic countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Iskander Erzini Vernoit, ADEL 2019 alumnus, co-wrote a chapter alongside Rim Berahab, Senior Economist at the PCNS about the Climate Crisis and Energy Transition. The report will be available soon on our website.

Annual Report on the Geopolitics of Africa

The fourth edition of Annual Report on the Geopolitics of Africa  is about the COVID-19 pandemic and the current priority issues of life on the African continent. This report is in line with the Policy Center’s objective: help Africa convey its own vision of itself and of the world, within an Afro-realistic spirit and advocate for a continent that is an integral part of the Global South and an emerging player in world affairs.

Policy Paper on “Purpose Driven Companies and the Regulation of the Fourth Sector”

The research project “Purpose-driven companies and the regulation of the Fourth Sector” is part of an inter-institutional effort involving the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Center for research for international development (IDRC).

 

This research project aims to support the process of regulation of the Fourth Sector. PCNS researchers Ahmed Ouhnini, research assistant in economics and Abdelaaziz Ait Ali, senior economist wrote a policy paper on the subject focusing on the Moroccan jurisdiction and contributing to the greater project, academically coordinated by ADEL 2019 alumnus and Peruvian lawyer Juan Diego Mujica Filippi.

Emerging Leadership Research Project: Emerging leadership and the leadership journey of young professionals is at the heart of the Policy Center's interests. In order to explore the different facets of leadership, the Policy Center for the New South carried out in-depth study in collaboration with Economia HEM Research Center, about “Emerging leaders: a model for empowering the next generation”, which focused on the ADEL community as a case study, and which will be available on the Policy Center’s website in January 2022.

ADEL PODCASTS

The series of podcasts “Bridging the Gender Gap” was launched to discuss gender and its intersectionalities, as well as gender equality and equity. In 11 episodes, topics around culture, technology, politics, economic development, and mental health were discussed with a gender perspective, exposing gaps and disparities and suggesting ways to overcome them.

Experts from the ADEL alumni community were interviewed by Lilia Rizk, Emerging Leader Unit Manager and Nihal El Mquirmi, International Relations Specialist, according to their expertise, and shared their thoughts as well as the work they are doing on topics and sectors ranging from Women in Policy-making, Women Empowerment through Technology to Women in Space.

ADEL  PORTRAITS

In 2021, the Policy Center published 12 ADEL alumni portraits. These portraits attempt to shed light on their leadership journey, as well as their search for a positive impact on their communities. They also look into what brought them to the ADEL program in the first place, and how their participation has had an impact on their personal and professional trajectories. The journalistic portraits are conducted by Sabine Cessou, freelance journalist and appear on the  PCNS website.

ADEL ALUMNI COMMUNITY BUILDING CALLS

The Policy Center for the New South holds regular virtual get-togethers with its ADEL Alumni Community members to reflect on time, leadership, personal development and more. These sessions enable ADEL alumni to share more about their respective journeys, achievements, hardships, and mindset, allowing for ideas to be shared and gaps to be bridged.  Several sessions were held throughout the year with individual cohorts of the program in an effort to continue fostering strong community ties.
