On February 20, the world observed the World Day of Social Justice, a moment to reflect on both the progress and the deep inequalities that persist. At the same time, Morocco has reinforced its commitment to social protection, and territorial and economic disparities remain a central challenge. The United Nations’ efforts to advance justice and equality are increasingly scrutinized on the global stage, as voluntary commitments often fall short of structural transformation. Meanwhile, climate change is not only an environmental crisis but a magnifier of socio-economic exclusion, particularly for rural women whose resilience remains undervalued. As we move forward, the question remains: Can existing frameworks drive real, systemic change, or will social justice remain an aspiration rather than a lived reality?

(FR) Social Justice in Question
Larabi Jaïdi
Despite its centrality in political discourse, social justice in Morocco remains largely aspirational, hindered by entrenched economic disparities and a fragmented approach to redistribution. Larabi Jaïdi underscores how territorial inequalities—exacerbated by economic concentration along the Atlantic coast—limit upward mobility, particularly for younger generations. While constitutional principles uphold equality, the mechanisms to translate these ideals into actionable policies remain inconsistent. Considering these structural constraints, to what extent can social protection reforms bridge the gap between political rhetoric and tangible progress?... Read more

The United Nations and Social Justice: A Noble Mission, A Flawed System
Ferid Belhaj
The United Nations was founded on the ideals of justice and equality, yet its structural limitations prevent it from being a true catalyst for social change. As Ferid Belhaj argues, while the UN has shaped global narratives on poverty and human rights, it often serves as a bureaucratic mediator rather than a force capable of challenging entrenched inequalities. The organization’s reliance on voluntary commitments, its selective approach to justice, and the dominance of major powers in its governance mechanisms undermine its credibility. With the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals approaching and progress faltering, can the UN transform itself from a custodian of the status quo into a genuine driver of social justice?... (FR) World Day of Social Justice
Nouzha Chekrouni
As climate change exacerbates socio-economic inequalities, rural Moroccan women find themselves at the nexus of environmental vulnerability and structural exclusion. Nouzha Chekrouni highlights how extreme weather events, unsustainable agricultural practices, and limited mobility due to social norms disproportionately impact women’s livelihoods, yet their role in climate resilience remains underutilized. While policy frameworks recognize gender as a crucial dimension of sustainable development, implementation gaps persist in land rights, access to technology, and economic inclusion. Can a gender-responsive climate strategy bridge the divide between policy ambitions and the lived realities of rural women?... Read more
