ADEL QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER Q4 2023

Dear ADEL Alumni and AD Community,

We are delighted to bring you a glimpse into the updates, events and accomplishments of our dynamic ADEL alumni community.

The 2023 edition of the ADEL program saw the active participation of 41 exceptional individuals hailing from diverse regions across the Atlantic Basin & Africa. Over the course of 3 intensive days of programming and an additional 3 days devoted to the Atlantic Dialogues conference, these participants demonstrated exemplary commitment and engagement. We extend our sincere appreciation to each participant and the alumni who graced us with their presence, contributing significantly to this year's program.

In recent months, the ADEL alumni have continued to make impactful strides in their respective fields. Their noteworthy contributions, reflected in blogs and collaborations with PCNS, underscore their dedication to advancing critical dialogues around the Atlantic.

10th Edition of the ADEL Program 2023

As is customary each year, the 2023 edition of the program consisted of sessions, workshops, and site visits. The cohort had the privilege of interacting with experts including Ade Mabogunje, a professor specializing in design thinking at Stanford University (California), Kassie Freeman, President and CEO of the African Diaspora Consortium, and Renée Cummings, Professor of Practice in Data Science at the University of Virginia. Their discussions spanned a diverse array of topics, ranging from the impact of Artificial Intelligence on future employment opportunities to exploring prospects in the Atlantic basin, as well as the application of design thinking in policymaking and sustainability within public policy.

The interactive workshops, with a focus on leadership, the intersectionality of gender and race, and the art of storytelling, among other subjects, provided the group with valuable insights and new tools for learning.

Visits to the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Benguerir, the Green Energy Park and Green Smart Building Park, along with a visit to the 1337 Coding School (Morocco's first coding school), provided the group with insights into the realm of Moroccan research and innovation.

Following their participation in the program, the ADEL cohort seamlessly transitioned to The Atlantic Dialogues conference, held in Marrakech from December 14 to 16.

During the event, one 2023 Emerging Leader spoke at a Breakout Dinner—an event featuring thematic discussions held in the city alongside the conference. Additionally, five leaders from the cohort had the opportunity to speak at the final plenary session, which was dedicated to the ADELs. Thiago Elert Soares, a young professional serving as the Head of Partnerships for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) from Brazil, addressed the topic of "Navigating Sustainability Dilemmas: Cultivating Global Agriculture for Food Security" during a Breakout dinner.

For the conference’s final plenary session, dedicated to the cohort, Hillary Briffa, Oumaima El Idrissi, Jens Meijen, Pedro Franciso Vormittag & Rosann "Roxy" Ndebumadu were selected by their peers to represent the group. They spoke on the theme "Wider Atlantic Challenges Viewed by Emerging Leaders" as a basis to share their experiences and talk about their expectations and ambitions for the future.
