The 3rd edition of the Africa Economic Symposium (AES) brought together key thinkers and policymakers to unpack the continent’s most pressing economic challenges ; from debt sustainability and monetary reform to trade integration and climate finance. This edition offered a timely space for critical debate and forward-looking solutions, highlighting the importance of context-driven strategies and inclusive growth.

MONETARY POLICY DECISIONS IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY

African central banks are constrained by external shocks, rigid inflation targeting, and limited policy autonomy, making current frameworks ill-suited for balancing price stability with inclusive growth. A shift toward broader mandates, stronger fiscal-monetary coordination, and context-specific tools is essential to manage volatility, support domestic demand, and build resilience ; especially amid climate and debt-related pressures.

FISCAL POLICY CHALLENGES : NAVIGATING PUBLIC FINANCE MANAGEMENT AND DEBT SUSTAINABILITY

Africa’s debt crisis is less about debt levels and more about debt servicing, which now consumes up to 50% of export revenues more than is spent on health and education. Solutions lie in better domestic resource mobilization (like property taxes and resource rents), efficient spending, and unlocking the full potential of AfCFTA. Structural transformation, not emergency measures, is key to escaping the debt trap.

PRESENTATION OF THE PCNS’S ANNUAL REPORT ON THE AFRICAN ECONOMY ALIGNING THE SCALES OF INTEGRATION

ECOWAS and African blocs must shift from declarations to concrete, project-based cooperation focused on industrialization, infrastructure, and digital tools. Integration should be inclusive, ensuring smaller states benefit, while financial flows prioritize productive investment over debt.

AFCFTA AT CROSSROADS : INTEGRATION IN AGE OF FRAGMENTATION

AfCFTA’s success hinges on effective, inclusive implementation that aligns national and continental strategies, supports less developed countries, and fosters green industrialization. To deliver real impact, integration must build regional value chains, promote climate-resilient growth, and ensure fair distribution of benefits. Institutional reform, public trust, and coordinated infrastructure are essential, with governance, sustainability, and youth employment at the heart of long-term transformation.

ECDOOMIC CORRIDORS AS CATALYSTS FOR GROWTH

AfCFTA is a young, long-term project rooted in Africa’s post-colonial trajectory and should not be judged by European benchmarks. Economic corridors can drive transformation, but only when embedded in strong industrial strategies, supported by anchor investments, inclusive planning, and open-access infrastructure. Without effective governance and coordination, corridors risk deepening inequalities or becoming extractive enclaves rather than engines of inclusive, sustainable growth.

BEYONG AID : NEW FRONTIERS IN DEVELOPMENT FINANCE

Development finance is moving beyond aid, focusing on domestic resource mobilization, regional integration, and climate-resilient growth. Success depends on building ecosystems ; not just funding projects ; and ensuring local value creation, accountability, and fair climate finance. Regional examples from Latin America and North Africa show the potential of homegrown, inclusive strategies.
